Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs

October 31, 2009

Another jam-packed day for the Kyle Cook Football Fan Club. We started off ON TIME with the goal of getting tickets for the 9 AM Fenway Park Tour across town.
Being with the Cooks is like an ESPN Road Trip. They talk sports, watch sports, play sports. Despite being lifelong Angels fans Damon wanted to see Fenway (to pee on home plate, he joked). For $12 the 8 of us had a guy named Steve take us through the Press Box, Right Field Pavilion and atop the Green “Monstah” as they say it. Peppering us with lots of trivia (and bad jokes) our 78 yr old tour guy kept up a steady stream of “yeah babys” as he enthusiastically shared his beloved Red Sox lore and legends.
We raced from there to Harvard and arrived at the Stadium just in time for kickoff at Kyle’s game.
Alas it wasn’t to be a repeat of last week’s victory. Dartmouth lost 42-21 but had some exciting moments. A touchdown drive just before the end of the first half was unexpected, a fake field goal play garnering a much needed first down was thrilling, and lots of great blocks by Kyle, offensive lineman at Right Guard kept me ringing my cow bell enthusiastically. Kyle is consistently outstanding. On one rollout, the QB swept clear to the sidelines with Kyle running along in front of him ready to take on any and all of the Harvard defense.
The weather today was a bit of everything. Sun, ominous dark clouds, gusty winds, and then blue skies. Rain is expected tonight. Temperatures were forecast to be 68-71 but it was probably cooler than that. A whirling dervish of changing weather patterns.
Very strange but not at all uncomfortable. Better than S-N-O-W!
We got to spend 30 minutes with Kyle before he had to board the team bus for school. He is such a good looking, articulate, personable young man. I’ve known him since he was 9 yrs old and he’s still growing. At 6-5, 270 he thinks he can still build up more size and strength. Nicole’s “little brother” is always striving to improve his game.
I’m happy to be in the Kyle Cook Fan Club!

Boston by Foot

October 30, 2009

My dogs are barking. After 8 hours of traipsing along the Freedom Trail, I have a newfound respect for the Cooks and their vacation preferences.
I was all for the Duck Tour or a nice Trolley trip but Noooooo, they wanted to walk all day.
Their casual style and glacial pace suits them fine but my bone spurred feet and cramping calves cry out for relief.
We saw everything from Boston Commons to Boston Garden. King’s Chapel, Old North Church and Paul Revere’s house, with several cemetaries thrown in for Halloween chills and thrills.
We ate lunch at the CHEERS bar. Nana had Boston Baked Beans.
We walked thru Little Italy and ate gelato. At North End we stopped at Mike’s Bakery (see photo). If these Cooks didn’t like to eat, I’d never make it.
We are waiting for Damon & Heather and then will go out to dinner and maybe surprise Kyle at his hotel. We have all day T passes on the subway (also good for the water taxi, which we took near USS Constitution ship and museum).
Boston by foot. The only good thing is that there’s a Dunkin Donuts on every other block.
I have Halloween socks for us gals to wear Saturday to the Dartmouth game. GO Big Green! Hope my feet feel better by then!

Cooks 6, Hibbs 2

October 30, 2009

Here I am in Boston with my beautiful daughter-in-law and her family to watch younger brother Kyle play football against Harvard.
Traveling with the Cooks is totally different than OUR family vacations.
We had a family “meeting” to pick our destinations and plan of action. In OUR family I just TELL everybody what we’ll be doing.
I suggested we meet in the lobby to start our day at 9 AM. Glenn, if he were here would’ve been up at 5 and ready to go by 6.
Nicole and I were in the lobby on time. The Cooks (not marching to the best of the same drum) trickled down fashionably 20 minutes tardy.0
In our family Aunt Karen would’ve been in the lobby by 8:30 I would’ve hustled down by 8:45 and Aunt Karol when showing up at 9:01 would’ve been LATE!
In comparing the different family styles— Nicole has both sets of grandparents and her great Grandma lived to 100. On our side EVERYBODY ‘S DEAD.
Go figure!

Bo rocks

Bo rocks!

October 27, 2009

Seeing BO again was so sweet. Steph picked me up at the airport. Couldn’t wait to get my hands on him.
Bo’s eyes twinkle, he laughs a throaty chuckle. He likes to be tickled. I Chased him around the house. He runs with a stiff legged but effective stride. Fewer stumbles, wobbles and falls.
We Played BUMPER BASKETS at Target and raced down the aisles, me next to him and Steph running neck and neck in the red shopping carts. Watched Bo dump a whole serving of easy mac on the floor during supper. He likes cooked carrots, yogurt, cheese, hot dogs, really everything!
He’s trying to feed himself but the spoon is more of a baton to be waved than an implement to get food in his mouth.
He had a bath, ran around naked or in just a diaper. Remember streaking? Almost 30 years ago we used to watch Stephanie and Sean “run in their un-s” as we called it to the heavy disco beat of Donna Summer and Saturday Night Fever.
Being away for six weeks, I can’t believe how much Bo has grown and developed. What a blessing to have this little cherub in our family.
His giggles are golden!

Why the pack mule face?

October 26, 2009

Trudging into LAX with a large rolling bag, a computer bag with 6 Muppet Show DVDs for Bo plus other misc, my red leather (NYC knockoff) Birkin bag AND a round Louis Vuitton purse. I can’t read terminal TV monitors to get my boarding pass. Where are my glasses? $20 to check ONE bag. I could’ve saved $5 online— NEXT time.
Thursday I fly to JFK and Boston.
Misread the gate # and slogged down to the 80’s when I only needed gate 73. Egad. At least I saw the bathrooms on the way back from Siberia. And there was no line at the Outer Limits newsstand. $1.10 for a USA Today.
Got a McD yogurt parfait. Keeping nutrition in the dairy column today.
Thanks Matt, my tech advisor, boy wonder but fixing my i-phone app to blog on. He’s such a great guy!
I’m sitting at one of the Mobile Charging kiosks. Got a hard small bottomed perforated steel stool and feel thankful for it!
Steph is picking me up at McCarran- Las Vegas. I had to UPS two large boxes to get all the rest of my crap home from Catalina. April 27 to October 12. It was a blast. Going back Nov 12-15 and Dec 2-8.
Happy trails

Matt and kit

October 26, 2009

Here’s Matt and Kit. We were together in San Diego for Sean’s Firefighting Open House and Night Drill. Dogs & Glenn are back at the Ranch. Matt hosted me at his NoHo condo. Now I’m going to fly back to Vegas.
